2015 West Adel U18's

Post by Milner Road on Sat Dec 27, 2014 8:16 pm

Can anyone give an update on how you have seen our Bloods U/18's (the defending SANFL premiers) have been looking during the pre-season training? Players to watch? When do they start back training etc?

I haven't been to their training yet, MR, but several have been training at senior level. I think they're the best group we've had come through for some years. Some to watch (apologies to many I've missed).

Riley Bonner - seems to have added cms since September and for those not familiar with him, he's a chance IMO to play seniors this year. Lovely left foot kick, long and accurate, will be drafted and very exciting.

Will Snelling - dominated the finals and his Reserves form was excelllent. Small on-baller who reads the game so well and concentrates whenwe don't have the footy, he racks up possessions and will play seniors early. Still room for improvement in some areas, but dedicated.

Hugh Haysman - Good skills, works hard and takes the game on. Has some class and should continue his improvement as the season goes on.

Jesse Watchman - tall forward/ruck who played the last game last season. Wasn't drafted and needs to improve his intensity at times, as seen in the Grand Final when unsighted in the first half and dominant in the second after a wake-up call from the Coach. Big blokes take a while, though, and I think Jess wil be an important part of our future.

Jaydn Brind - has been training with the 18's, but was a surprise big impact player in the finals. From Roxby Downs(?) and just keot getting the footy. Underage player with a huge future.

Josh Holliday - struggled in the finals with a foot injury, but kickef about 50 goals as a 'floating' forward. Close to the best kick for goal in the club, doesn't make many mistakes and looks a handy player.

Kayne Cornish - training with the 18's. Missed a lot of last season through injury, but had a good finals series. Real dasher and if he comes on as hoped, would add real pace to our line-up.

Jack Agostino - ready made league player. Classy, great skills, what more can I say?

Harrison Westhoff - Had a great Grand Final. Ideal tall defender when he gets more experience.

I'll add several others later.

It will be exciting watching these lads progress.

Aaron Francis - another draft likelihood next year, Aaron is at home either forward or back as a key position player. Plenty of ability, but perhaps needs to work on consistency and intensity.

Brett Turner - classy goalkicking mid-fielder with great vision and good skills. If he applies himself, he would play League footy this year.

I heard that past WAFC player Eddie Hocking sons are training with the U18's and that the youngest son kicked 4 goals in an U18 internal trial a couple of weeks back? Any truth in that?

I went and watched the U18s train during the week. Appears that they are being worked very hard by their coach. There are some big, strong and fast lads coming through the ranks.

Do you have any information on the U18 squad Lee?

Perhaps you could help - given u know exactly how many jobs Lee has at the club????

If u don't - perhaps you could find out who the big fellas are?

Just caught up.

Love your interest in the 18's, MR.

I went to part of their internal trial a couple of weeks ago and was impressed.

I have a particular interest in the progress of the Mallee lads (one of my jobs is liaising with our wonderful Mallee Zone.

I received a terrific update about the progress of our juniors from the Coach during the week and will share some of the news on that ASAP.

If you get the chance, go and have a look at some junior games. Last year I enjoyed watching several minor round games, watching the progress of the lads.

A couple of things. I had a lovely day yesterday, on the bus to Loxton North with the Under 18's for their internal trial there. I'll give a summary of the trial and some of the youngsters soon, but there are some fery talented kids coming through.

By the way, there's a great article in today's Sunday Mail about our Elite Development Program. I'll try to find a link.

It was good to catch up with one or two ex-players, Eddie Hocking, whose lads were playing in the trial and Dean 'Dingo' Schumann, now coaching Barmera.

There were also the few funny incidents which will become folklore for those involved, as happens on these trips.

Next week I'll be driving to Karoonda for our Under 16 internal trial.

Hi Lee,

Well done on all those who made the trip!

My take is we are a younger U18 and U16 side this year and one of the shorter sides in the 18's. I think we average around the 179.5 cm mark. The Eagles average a massive 186cm (Must have something to do with the re-zoning and acquiring the taller players from their old zone and ports zone.) Most sides average around the 180-181 cm.

We have quite a few U16's training (Hocking and Haysman are two I know of) up with the 18's who I understand have more than held their own so far. I don't envy the coaches of the 16's and 18's making the hard choices finalising the squads in the coming week(s). Like Jarrod Meers has said, his emphasis is on fast tracking players that will play 50+ league games and I am looking forward to a handful of last years players having an impact with the league side this year.

I couldn't get to the game today but wow I just saw on the club Facebook site that our U18 result vs Sturt today was a whopping 139 point victory. I know it's only a trial but surely not????

What time are U18's playing? Are they playing after the League? I suspect their game vs Eagles will be a cracker game like the League game too.

For the second week ina row I watched the first half of our game today. We looked far too strong for Sturt and led by 6 goals at half time, eventually winning by about 12 goals.

The game was notable for a number of things, but especially the total dominance of Riley Bonner. Riley had been well down on form, but had 25 possessions at half time and finished with 3 goals. Quite outstanding.

Jaydn Brind was also exceptional, kicking 4 goals and getting plenty of the footy and I was particularly impressed with Tyler Wagner. Not big enough to be a ruckman, he nonetheless jumped over the much bigger Sturt ruckman, took some nice marks, always had an effective second effort and finished up kicking 4 goals, I think.

Plenty of other good players.

Our 16's went down by 6 or 7 goals, but are much improved.
