Trial game v Sturt

Post by blackandred on Fri Mar 20, 2015 11:10 pm

It was a drawn result in the West/Sturt trial at Richmond tonight. WA 10.13 to Sturt 11.7. We were in front when the siren went but Sturt kicked an unbelievable goal from the boundary 50m out to draw the contest.

There was a strong southerly breeze and most of the scoring was done at the northern end.

West supporters can be well pleased with the endeavour shown by their team tonight. Lots of quick movement of the ball, plenty of tough gets and fitness looked to be pretty good based on the manner in which they ran out the game. We competed well at the stoppages and probably came out in front there for the night.

While many players only played a half of footy around 30 rotated over the evening and there were promising signs from the younger brigade with Snelling making the transition to senior level with ease. Haysman going where angels fear to tread and getting knocked around for his efforts. They were the standouts. Porplyzia and Stevens got plenty of the ball. Porps hurt his finger and left the ground. Willets and Nelson shared ruck duties. Both got there hands to the ball but couldn’t always place it to advantage. Hardy played FF all night. He needs plenty of footy in him before the first round. He took a couple of marks but didn’t do much else. Helbig and Wasley-Black were not prominent. Ezard looked classy and dominated from the last line in the first half, Green played forward, Schmidt played back, Simon Wong booted 3 goals, Silverlock in everything early, Keogh well beaten by the Sturt FF, Agostino looks to be a smooth mover – think Hamish Hartlett.

At this early stage of the season it looks as though some of the young kids will be putting real pressure on some of the more established players and that will be a good thing. Midfield looked sharp. We moved the ball quickly and impressively into the forward line but still don’t have key forwards to take a strong grab – nothing new there! Early days.

But it was the same old bomb it into the forwards and hope they get it but if they lead, and train the players up field to look for them. The days are over for jumping full forwards to take a screamer, but I enjoyed the night. great BBQ, thanks guys.

Thanks Lee
I got home from an outing and watched the last quarter via you-tube streaming with Andy Marks commentating. Other than an odd glitch in streaming here and there (my modem is probably to blame), hats off the our tech guys for making this possible.

I like the look of Haysman too! I saw Wasley-Black take a great intercept mark, play on BUT then he had no one forward of centre to kick to. This is still a problem we need to solve before round one as it stopped us from making a super quick transition. All in all, I liked what I saw in that final quarter - Stevens probably shuld have kicked those two goals which would have given us an unassailable lead but he missed and the draw resulted. Hopefully Porps is Ok -

Lee, did Sturt use a smiliar amount of players - I noted in that final quarter they had many regulars (Evans, Coad, Staples, Kirkwood....)

Random thoughts.

1. Schmidt off the half back line was a great move and set up alot of our attacks.
2. 4 or five of our best players last year had shockers last night.
3. Willo and Nelson did well in the ruck.
4. Well done to Hardy after a very limited pre season. Kicked a couple and could have had more if we didn't kick it on his head.
5. Agostino and Haysman are both ready to play league and may keep some big names out of the league team.
6. Hope Porps finger is not as bad as some thought last night.
7. Good to see Dustin Head play again.
8. Hampton in the reserves looks very exciting to watch.
9. Replacing the blown globes didn't seem to make much difference. Having said that the terraces are well lit.
10. Draw in the league and a small win in the reserves was about right.
11. Shocked Shocked Shocked

Think we should have won last night.

Needed another marking target up forward other than Hardy.
Webb to come in next week to fill that role

Our defence was very good although Keough did struggle.
There is a definite switch with the personal that played there last night.
Schmidt,Ezard,Agostino and Wasley Black all good users of the ball.
All these guys were prepared to run and create from defence.
Based on what I saw last night Milne may miss out and
Wasley Black would take the third tall forward

Agostino was cool for a 17year old and is all class. Both Haysman and Snelling were good
Francis in the ressies we as also very good as was Hampton and Dodds Watson

Some exiting young kids for sure that are all a product of our
Junior programme. However Francis,Haysman,Snelling and Agostino
will all probably play in the U/18 National Competition which
is great for them but bad for us

It's always hard to judge these trials atjunior level, as the coaches rotate a lot of lads through different halves.

Our first half Under 16's were smashed by Sturt, then our second half were far too good for Sturt's second half group. Overall, Sturt won the trial comfortably.

Our Under 18's were miles too good for Sturt up to 3/4 time, when I left. Sturt struggled to kick a goal until the 3rd term.

Webb played a half in the reserves last week. Would expect him play 3/4 to a full game tomorrow night. Solly a possibility for tomorrow night. Not sure on Klemke.
