WEST V Norwood.

Post by Second Team on Mon Aug 17, 2015 7:26 pm

Thoughts for this week.

Schmidt in. Thank god he is back.
Haysman out. Has been average for weeks.
Would like to see Helbig get back in the side.
Klemke is a backman. He does not have the flair to play forward.
If Keough has a game like last week then move him forward and put Hardy or Middleton back.
Middleton was very poor on the weekend but has been one of the success stories for this year.  Shocked  Shocked  Shocked

I think we will struggle on Saturday.
We don't seem to handle sides that can lock the game down.
Norwood do this better than any side.
We don't have a big forward that can take 6 marks inside 50.
Fielke and Green have been great but they need more help.
Hope I'm proven wrong on Saturday!!!

In Schmidt
Out Haysman

All year we have lacked a key marking forward in fact we haven't had one
since Bradshaw.

Recruiting committee need to find a a quality key position player for next

Either that or some small crumbing forwards. Our leading scorers are mid-sized marking forwards.

WEST
West Adelaide has boosted its midfield with the return of captain Chris Schmidt for Saturday’s clash with Norwood at City Mazda Stadium.
Schmidt, who was a late withdrawal against South last Saturday, has been joined in the Bloods’ 23-man squad by former Richmond on-baller Brad Helbig and Reserves Magarey Medallist Nick Homburg.
A former Crow, Schmidt will play his 100th SANFL match for the Bloods against the Redlegs.
Running defender Riley Bonner, who made his League debut last round against the Panthers, is the only certain exclusion at this stage.
Magarey Medallist James Ezard will play his last game for the club in the Reserves after announcing he will retire due to a persistent shoulder injury.

League
F: Middleton, Hardy, Fielke
HF: Green, Tuck, Beech
C: Snelling, Stevens, Schiller

INT: Porplyzia, Haysman, Helbig, Klemke, Homburg
IN: Schmidt, Helbig, Homburg
OUT: Bonner

Reserves
Agostino, Ezard, Newell, Hayball, Hopton, Webb, Milne, Munn, Nelson, Taheny, Vick, Favretto, Dijksman, Holliday, Johnson, Brind, Bonner, Cua, Burgess, Sporn, G. Hampton.

Can't really believe that Bonner was dropped. One of only a few that can kick a ball at West. Shocked Shocked Shocked

Totally agree with Second Team, what a joke! why bring Bonner in for 1 game? makes alot of sense....not. From what I saw last week, the likes of Klemke, Willits, Middleton & Hardy should go before the kid. He has an elite kick and sets everything up, i lost count of how many times he and Haysman were burnt by senior players. And why did Haysman and Bonner spend so much time on the bench? South were down to 1 fit player yet Bonner didnt come on until the 16 minute mark of the last qtr. Mickan was totally out coached again, and why do they continue to persist with Homburg baffles me, he gets 30+ possessions each week and 80% of them he turns over. In my opinion a big broom needs to go through starting in the 2nds. Play the kids as they want to compete and represent the jumper, some of the 22-26 years old look like they just don't want to be there!

I can't believe that Bonner was dropped either. As ST said he is a top kick & has good pace & certainly didn't look out of place in the league side.

Agree WJ looked comfortable and didn't look out of place. You'd think with Norwood's 18 man press that you'd include an elite kick. Obviously not!!

Into the 2nd quarter of the Reserves. Webby has kicked 3, Jimmy playing really well, along with Haysman.

What a performance.

A little bit of egg on a few faces.

The selectors obviously went for strong bodies to counter Norwoods greatest strength. It worked!!!!

Thanks also to Jimmy E and 100 gamer Schmidty for autographing my boys hat - They were stoked!

I don't see why there should be egg on anyones face here?

It was more than reasonable to expect a loss today before the match considering our performance last week. Apart from that i just saw a few people who thought Bonner should not have been dropped. I don't see anything wrong with that.

As for the match - granted i didn't see the first half - and it was a good performance and a great win - very happy to beat Norwood finally, and comfortably.

Few points though not to get too excited:

a.) We got off to a slow start, in the finals, that could be enough to spell game over.
b.) We kicked 9 points straight in the third term - when we had a chance to put the match beyond doubt. Bad kicking is bad footy.
c.) I know we can't be responsible for how our opponents played - but Norwood were horrible - possibly their worst performance since 2009.

So let's not get too excited. Head down and job to be done next week.

Congrats to Jimmy E, always great to watch, fair sportsman and stood up as a champion of our club when we were a rabble.

Great effort by the boys today. When we were 4 goals down within first 10 minutes I thought Norwood how far. Well done to the boys

The best performance for the year today especially given the start Norwood had
A total team effort today we didn't have a passenger.
I really liked the way we pressured Norwood when they had the ball
We should have won by more

Best players
Porps - Was magnificent. Has had a fantastic year.
Schmidt -Always plays well
Schiller- Will win our most improved
Hill- Played his best game for the year
Caire- gave Phillips a bath
Willits- beat a much bigger opponent in Baulderstone

With that win it means we control our own destiny in regards to the double chance

Dl550 u can only play as well as the opposition let you as we experienced last week. So we should be excited considering our recent history against Norwood.

I think this win should help our mental approach if we face Norwood in the finals. How do you think our boys would go if we were beaten again by those bludgers. I hate them.

Random Thoughts.

1. Best win I have seen at home for 10 years.
2. Whoever put Willo back in the team would be feeling very happy.
3. Schmidt is our best player by a mile.
4. Won the hitouts and the clearances.
5. Put Norwood under pressure and they cough the ball up as good as anyone.
6. Well done to Jimmy on a great final game.
7. Well done to the reserves that won a game.
8. I hope we have the same desire next week.
9. We need to win next week and get the double chance.
10. Helbigs hit on some random Norwood guy was great to watch.
11. Harts should kick more goals from 60 out.
12. Shocked  Shocked  Shocked

* Tend to agree with dl550. I dont believe many thought we were going to win let alone perform like that!! BTW I cant see in this forum where MPersp. actually tipped us.
* Was probably one of the most enjoyable games of SANFL I have ever been to. It had everything....a beaut day, great skills and endeavour and a heep of Legs supporters who went from hero to zero in about 15 minutes Very Happy
* I'm no football expert...what did the coaches and senior players do to achieve such an amazing turnaround in the 2nd qtr??
* MM's contract extension would appear to be a very good decision
* Something special is brewing!!!!!!!

My favourite part of the game was not the dramatic turnaround, not the overall team effort/skills, not Hartlett's 60m goal, not the final margin, but Baulderstone slipping over in our goal square.

All I ever do is try my hardest to remain positive at all times billrobs whilst many posters were writing us off after the poor performance against South. I hadn't!!!

I honestly held the belief that we were better than that & MM would bring the best out of the boys to bounce back for the Norwood encounter.

The players have a great deal of respect for their coach & have responded many times this season when we have been under the pump. That is probably one of the reasons Mark has been reappointed.

You have to agree that our attacking style of footy is not only great to watch but can tear sides apart when we get it right. All that has a lot to do with MM's attitude towards the game. He must have learnt a lot from KING KERLS coaching when Mark won B&F's. KERLS famous line was that he didn't care if the opposition kicked 20 goals as long as we kicked 21.

If we can beat Port or go close at Alberton I think we can go deep into the finals.
