West vs Centrals

Post by Thiele on Thu Aug 25, 2016 4:46 pm

WEST
West Adelaide could blood Sudanese utility Chol Majok in its final match of the season against Central at My Money House Oval on Saturday.

Recruited from Flagstaff Hill, Majok (194cm and 86kg) is an athletic 26-year-old who can play in a variety of positions including the ruck.

He has been joined in the Bloods’ 23-man squad by experienced pair Justin Hardy (ankle) and Travis Tuck (back) who have recovered from minor ailments.

Goalsneak John Noble has also been added to the extended interchange bench, which must be trimmed by two before the bounce.

Midfielder Hugh Haysman (knee) and key forward Daniel Webb (ankle) will miss the Bloods’ last encounter with minor injuries.

Running defender Daniel Caire will play his 200th IGA League match after making his debut in 2006.

I thought the guys fought the game out today.
The effort was there but our kicking lets us down.
Too many times, we simply don't hit our target.
We need to find half a dozen recruits that can come in and make an immediate impact at league level.
I don't see a lot of young talent coming through....
Rankine is one and he is one to watch next year.

Congratulations to the retiring players.
Harts, Tuck and Willits. Their leadership, effort and commitment will be missed.

Well done to Daniel Caire on 200 games. A terrific player for the club.

When Zac O’Brien goalled at the 21 minute mark of the last Q Westies were only 18pts down with a rough chance of ……………no, just wishful thinking. Centrals then proceeded to kick 4 goals in as many minutes to finish all over a gallant, determined, undermanned but pretty average Westies unit. Final score 18.8 to 11.8.

Centrals weren’t at their best but were good enough to beat us comfortably. The difference was their skilful disposal against our shoddy kicking and handball. Disturbingly, our skills have not improved, in fact, they have gotten worse through the season. Look at the margins in the latter part of the year. This is a poor reflection on the coaching staff.

In his 200th game Daniel Caire was our best player for four Qs of strong defensive footy. Well done Daniel and thanks for your contribution to our club. Congratulations also to Adam Hartlett and Travis Tuck, both playing their last games. Formwise Hartlett remains one of the best defenders in the SANFL but his body has let him down. Ironically, he finished his career at full forward.

It was great to see the 2 young indigenous players, Izak Rankin (16yo) and Graham Hampton (20) out there today. They have plenty of pace and skill, attributes in short supply at West Adelaide this year. Hopefully we will enjoy more of them next year.

Our defence again were pretty ordinary. 3 of them had a grand total of 11 kicks between them in 100 minutes of footy. In the last 5 weeks we have seen a staggering average of 20 goals kicked against us each game.

The 2s had an excellent win, 11.11 to 9.13. They have improved through the year and showed some poise and skill in the last Q. They will finish in 6th place, the best result for any of our 3 teams this year.

Thank goodness this year is over. While we are still the reigning premiers is has been a dreadful year falling from top to bottom. With the players we lost from 2015 plus the retirements of Tuck, Hartlett and Willets, it is hard to see how we can improve much next year. Haysman, Hill, Fielke, Green, Silverlock and Schiller have all had poor seasons and who knows if Porplyzia will play again. Of our 3 gun recruits this year (Waite, O’Brien and Stubbs) only O’Brien held his place. Only Schmidt and Stevens can be proud of their seasons. Jay Schultz would be useful in 2017.
