Great Grand Final victory, a truely memorable day but as I have said before we were not the best team throughout the year just the best team on the day. Lucky win.

A "lucky win" ...and therein lies the problem with hopeless negativity. Let's face it, the planet could be hit by a meteorite tomorrow, so we should all cower and whimper. Like I said, #FFS Sad

No-one enjoyed this season.
I was talking to a mate of mine last week who has been a life long West Torrens/Eagles supporter. He said to me "tough year eh?" I said "yep...." He replied "I'd have taken bottom this year for the thrill of a flag last year. Finishing second twice is much worse"
He didn't need to tell me this, I already knew.
Roll on 2017!

No, I struggled with it, and I am watching what our people are doing about it, and so far I am optimistic with our recruiting and approach. In the first instance I just asked a simple question, a bit surprised that people can always drag up the negatives...lesson learnt, I guess.  Very Happy Yeah, good one The Axis, so true!!!

The best I can do to answer broblach's earlier question is to say the recruiting committee have been busting their collective boilers to find a ruckman.
It has been a priority since the last season ended when big Brucey retired.

Problem: Very few good ruckman around & those who we have spoken to are demanding much more money than we have got. Good ruckman are always in high demand. The search is not over yet but getting harder by the day.
Re your second part of the question if 2M Pete gets fit, commits to the team I'm sure he will pick himself.
You must understand that 2yrs ago he was not completely committed, missed considerable training due to work & study plus was not performing very well in the twos as a consequence. In addition the team was reasonably settled with big Brucey & spider Webb fully committed & leading the way in ruck. The end result can't be questioned. They were both fantastic in the premiership.

That's why the coach wasn't picking him NOT that he was out of favour.

What is the latest with recruiting and gain/loss of players ?
Are there likely to be any more recruits added to our list or is that it for 2017?

Given that we finished bottom and have lost Hardy, Hartlett, Tuck, O'Brien, Willits, Stubbs and I think Slattery, it doesn't look like we've done enough does it?

Our defence has improved significantly with the signing of Wilson and Keuogh, however once again we have been unable to sign a good genuine ruckman which is very frustrating.

Secondly we have lost Tuck and O'Brien from our midfield and they haven't been replaced. Porps is coming back from injury however its big ask for  32 year old to lead our midfield.

I would be much happier if we could sign a good midfielder before recruiting finishes.

They probably have - no other SANFL team has recruited a player from the VFL's 2016 State team. I'm just speculating on whether, given what we've lost, it's enough.

With Tuck and O'Brien missing I think it's an opportunity also for a couple of other players to step up. I would like to see Wasley -Black tried in the Midfield including the centre square. He has big body, he is fast and has a good kick. Hopefully he is enjoying a good preseason.
I also think Brad Helbig should be given an opportunity as well, he is aggressive and he has good pace, however he needs to get fit.

I don't think many of the other SANFL clubs have recruited that well except for Norwood who have had a
number of Ex Players returning. Centrals are similar to Norwood.

I think we will be ok next year, however we need our best 21 on the park.

I believe we have recruited better than most other SANFL clubs it whether we can cover our loses is the unanswered question.

Helbig needs a mentor......if only he went as hard at the ball as he does at the man he has the potential to be a very good player. I find him frustrating to watch. The same as I found Hartlett hard to watch up until about 3 years ago when he matured.

Sure.

So with Nelson not at the club who rucks this season? Has Chol developed enough over the pre season? If Webb is forced to ruck again dare I say that will be the end of his career. His body doesn't seem to be able to cope with the constant battering that ruckman cop.

Re: Recruiting

There was an internal trial Friday night, with very good numbers and good ball movement.

Watchman, Bottin and McPherson rucked in the part I watched.

Chol played in defence and looked vastly improved and more confident.

I thought several of our senior players from last year looked much fitter, Taite Silverlock in particular.  Wilson looked really solid in defence and there were a lot of good signs.

Early days, though.

Good point about Webby, brodlach. I don't think he'll be ready for a while yet after his operation.

If Chol played back does that mean Tommy is going to play forward? Or three talls maybe in defence? Hearing Wilson is a big man.

Not sure about those three playing ruck all season

Yes, gives us some flexibility.

You're right, though, ruck is a problem without Webby. We searched high and low for a decent one, but they were all rookied.

Eagles obviously found the same.

I'm hoping Jesse Watchman will surprise. Saw him dominate the ruck in a Reserves game at Norwood 2 years ago.
