Ryan Feruson announces his retirement.

Post by firstblood on Sat Oct 12, 2013 8:27 am

The West Adelaide Football Club regrets to inform our Members and supporters that Ryan Ferguson has announced his retirement with plans to relocate back to Victoria.

History will show Ryan Ferguson as perhaps the best player to wear a West Adelaide guernsey. His leadership, courage and pride in performance could never be questioned. He finishes as one of the Club's longest serving captains.

The West Adelaide Football Club will forever look to Ryan as a champion player and a champion person.

We also acknowledge the contribution from his wonderful wife Bree Munro in her role of Player Welfare Manager.

Ryan, Bree and their family will always be welcome back at the Club and they will be missed by many. We wish them all the best for the future.

I'm one of Fergie's greatest fans, but it's a big (and probably) inaccurate statement to say he's perhaps the best ever to wear a West guernsey.

In the best ever team, certainly.

Best ever player, doubt it.

Thanks, Fergie, class from start to finish.

Thanks Fergy for the great pleasure I had from watching you play. You deserve all the accolades you are getting. It is a priviledge to have known you. I wish all the best for you and your family. They will all be missed at the club. One day Logan Ferguson will become another great footballer I am sure.

Thanks Ferg. Great to watch and the true meaning of a courageous captain. Always led by example and a great clubman. Not many players have the guts to go back the wrong way into a pack as much as Ferg did during his career. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

In his first year with us, I posted on SAFooty that he was the best CHB in the League. I was ridiculed, but time proves all.

His mark at Central remains just about the best mark I've seen.

The most recklessly courageous player I've seen and certainly one of the most skilful.

One thing that's not commented on much is his coolness under pressure, where he invariably makes the correct decision and option.

It was a huge honour to address the players the week before his 100th game and I said he would be an automatic selection in any team picked by West Adelaide supporters.

Thanks, Fergie, you're a champion.

It has been a pleasure to watch this guy play for our club. It's not possible to say who is the best Bloods player I've seen in the nearly 60 years I've been following the Bloods but he is right up there with the best - Neil Kerley, Ken Eustice, Peter Meuret, Robert Day, Jeff Bray, etc. (I'm sure I've missed a few but it's a personal view).
I wish him and his family all the best for the future.
Thanks for the great memories - including THE mark on the eastern wing of the Ponderosa.

It would be quite a bit of work but a video highlights package of his career with us would be pretty spectacular.

More to the point that he wanted to go back home to Victoria for family reasons with two young kids. Cannot fault Ferg and what he did for the club

Exactly right, how many players retire from SANFL and play on at a lower level, good luck to him and all the best to his family. Move on to anyone who has any opposition to where he plays.

Spot on guys.Hope Fergy has a great yr playing for Williamstown. It was obvious with 2kids under the age of two and no family in SA that he would go back Melbourne

Collins wanted Fergy and so he should.

I wish him all the best. It probably would have been a waste of talent if he retired completely. I am sure he will always have a soft spot for the Bloods.

When i first saw Fergie backing into a pack and taking a courageous mark at Elizabeth in his first year with Westies, i thought at the time...'we have a beauty here' and i was right. Great player, captain and family man, i wish him and his wife Bree all the best.
