Full Time Coach Empty Full Time Coach

Post by Lachlan on Sun May 19, 2019 3:31 pm

I think we need to appoint a Full time Coach, whoever that maybe.
Hopefully it’s Colville.

By appointing a full time Coach one of his Major Responsibilities would be RECRUITING.

What do others think?

Don’t need a full time coach at SANFL level.
There isn’t enough money to pay a full time coach.
Other teams have been in dire financial trouble in recent times, namely Sturt and Glenelg and have been able to overcome their issues.

Wolf Pack
Both Sturt and Glenelg have full time coaches.

Secondly Glenelg’s Financial Position May have improved thanks in part to the HoldFast Shores Council foregoing interest repayments for the Glenelg loan.

I believe Collins was a full time coach. Cost us heaps and never got us a Premiership. Though I do concede he put us on the right path. I think players are more important right now. We have to start winning again before we loose to many more supporters. Success breeds success.

As a former league property steward i have from the inside seen both part time and full time coaches also have observed the background to recruiting a player.

A full time coach or more relevant a full time coaching & training staff would be sensational however in the real world i understand that it costs between 30% to 50% (if not more) for a full time coach so i find it hard to see it being supported by the club where the priority is financial matters over football matters.

In my time i can not recall any player recruited until such time as the coach of the day is asked if he supports recruiting said player further in most cases the coach of the day is an important part of the interview process with said potential recruit.

Potential recruits are suggested to the club from a range of contacts including but not limited to former players, members, the recruiting panel and the various coaching panels and staff including the football manager.

All suggestions go to the recruiting committee who in close consultation with the senior coach, football manager and CEO determine if the club will initiate discussion with the player or not.

Given legal and financial issues related to players contracts i cannot think of a player who's contract negations were not conducted by either or jointly the CEO & football manager.

Above my best recollections but if Lee or others can correct then feel free.

I agree with lachlan, I think we do need a full-time coach. It is still a massive job part-time, and is made more difficult if that person has to hold down another job as well. A full time coach would cost us, what, another 30-odd grand? And if that person can then take on the role of actively researching, pursuing and recruiting players, then it's good value for money.

mikeme ------- to best of my knowledge Gavin is part time and continues his daytime job as (i believe) a university lecturer.

Having said this it has been my observation of part time coaches over many years that they work many many hours of their free time away from the club and also take/make multiple phone or have meetings also in their limited free time ----- the job does not leave much time for the wife and kids so i deeply admire their dedication.

Perhaps part time by job description but full time by actual task needs is a way of describing it.

Gavin is no longer a uni lecturer.
His sole job is coaching West Adelaide Football Club.

Anyone only has to ask him and he will tell them this.

mikeme ----- i take what you say on face value but must ask if he has been appointed as a full time coach by the club or are you reflecting the personal unpaid commitment he is putting in with his actual club appointment staying as a part time coach??

If he has been appointed full time by the club then that is excellent if not then his attitude is fantastic
