Eagles v West Empty Re: Eagles v West

There is a certain kind of inevitability about watching us play this year. Yesterday it was the certainty that a team containing 10 players who had played Reserves football this year would struggle against a middle of the road team of experienced league players who had played together for years, especially at a home ground that had been a difficult venue for us for many years.

We had put up a more than respectable effort the previous week against the AFL team with all its privileges, but history tells us that such efforts 2 weeks in a row are rare.  First, however, we saw a good win by a Reserves team that is far from the best or most experienced Reserves team we’ve fielded.  It was noticeable for Mason Middleton kicking 4 goals and we’d hope that Mason continues to progress.

As to the game, the first quarter went according to script.  We played pretty well, but the scoreboard didn’t indicate that much.  There were danger signs, as we were being taken to the cleaners by Redden in ruck and our midfield struggled accordingly.  Nathan Batley started well, as did debutant Kyle Kirk, the defence stood up and we more than held our own. What could have been a bigger lead was wasted by some ordinary efforts at key times.

The rest of the game reflected the margin.  The game was all but over at half-time, so my remaining interest was to see who would stand up in the second half.  It was good to see some of the senior players do so, but disappointing to some others not able to take the opportunity to impress.  That meant some had to cover for the shortcomings of others, or see their good work go unrewarded. If that’s harsh, League footy is a tough gig and you have to be harsh to succeed.

I admired the efforts of some.  Kaine Stevens had 34 touches, with a ruck that was smashed.  Sure, some of his disposal was poor, but the effort and desire for the team was forefront.  Logan Hill showed leadership and respect for the jumper, Tom Keough battled hard all day, Patrick Fairlie hasn’t yet had enough games to work out how good he could be, but battled on, Murray Waite continues to improve and will be a damaging player if we can get more good players around him, Jonno Beech continues to be asked to do the impossible by being basically our only key forward and Josh Ryan won his position by hurting about any disposal his opponent gets, making sure they’re hard earned.  You can’t ask for more.  Some of those I haven’t mentioned just had bad days.

So we’re past mid-season and we’ve been hit hard by the arrogant mid-season draft and injury.  Until yesterday, the coach has been producing mostly decent displays from a team lacking in terms of top-end talent, but reality showed up yesterday.  He deserves better.

I left the ground hurt.  Hurt that our club is in this position.  Hurt that all the loyal supporters that still go out to the huddle at the breaks are offered little hope and are gradually becoming detached from the SANFL competition.

There’s a bye next week.  That’s good and I’ll be there for the next game, which I think we’ll win.

If Alistair Clarkson coached us yesterday it would have been the same result.

We had at least 8 or 9 players that Simply are not up to SANFL standard. We were smashed in the Ruck and the midfield.

At the start of the game our forward line was Beech,Hupfeld,Pillon,
Anderson,Haysman and Osborn, no wonder we cannot kick a winning score. IF Middleton plays league again this year he will improve our forward structure, however we are desperately short of another Key Marking target and a good small goal kicking crumber.

I understand we have injuries, however when we had a full list at our disposal we weren’t winning games.

Stevens was best and Ryan was fantastic yet again. He has been a stand out all year. Young Fairlie has also  been a very consistent performer and he would be even better if we recruited a couple of gun midfielders.

Not to many of our players would get into a top 5 team.

If any of our Board members saw yesterday's game and don't believe that we need to play with a full salary cap as a priority, they should resign.

In every game this year, West have shown play worthy of finals. The endurance of this play appears to vary according to the strength of the opposition. Yesterday and at Elizabeth were the least of periods.
Inaccuracy seemed to allow the rot to set in.
One note, the mild-mannered (thx Lee) Wasley-Black is getting frees, 25m penalties and reversals rather than giving them away. Pity this is coming at a time where it is insignificant.
