Hi fellow loyal West Adelaide supporters.

How do we all feel about the lads having to play 6 Friday night games this year? The first against a mostly professional outfit after our boys have a good day at work they then front up to play while Port get to sit around and relax before they get to play.

Virtually 11 Saturday games (1 Friday afternoon) is a good thing along with only 1 Sunday game.

Our development side will basically have to have 6 half days off work when they need to play on the Friday afternoons that would cut into any match payments that they receive.

On the Friday night games the club can only stay open for a couple of hours after the game that makes it hard for a lot of revenue raising with the presentations being quite late. (playing Friday nights could have us in a bad mood for the whole weekend)

My view would be just play Saturdays. Most suburban Junior football is played on a Sunday so a good chance to get family's there on a Saturday.

But let us all know - how would you like the season fixture - Too late for this year but we have more years to come.

Its my understanding that before the SANFL enters into actually compiling the game schedule then they ask all clubs for what is their preference and then attempt to balance all clubs requests with the needs of programming games ( Lee, is this correct?)
Given this I presume that West Adelaide based on potential financial returns to the club requested night games and Saturday games --- if this is correct then I support the Clubs decision as we the Members have charged the Board & staff with taking all actions appropriate to enhance our Financial position.

Whilst openly admitting I get to few games due to my illness I personally like night games and have since I was about 6 years old (64 years ago LOL) even though then at Norwood oval the lights were so poor you could not see play at the other end of the ground. I have never liked Sunday games as it intrudes on what is in my opinion a day for family.

Your comment about the Development players is so correct and onto that you must add all the Volunteer Staff (Trainers, Property staff, Doctor, Time Keeper and others) ---- Given various facilities like the BBQ is staffed by volunteers many time they are not open until late in the Development Game.

Another issue is that in many cases the Volunteer Staff involved in both the League and Development games are the same hence the magic idea by the SANFL of split games (eg League on Friday an Development on Saturday) is a real impost and for this reason I will never support our club playing as the first game for the AFL Power or Crows at Adelaide Oval.
Been there, done that so know from experience as the League Property Steward just how bad it is.

You're correct, oldfella. Clubs are asked to nominate 3(?) fixture preferences. This is just a wishlist and often isn't granted, due to the complexities of the fixture, but I think the League does its best tyo help.

Your point about volunteers is very well made. It's OK for paid officials to put out a program, but early Friday games for the Development team means missing up to a half day's work for volunteers and their feeling is that they're taken for granted at such times. Often it can't be helped, but it should be borne in mind.

So page 59 of the advertiser today, has a piece on the 2020 draw.
Each club gave their thoughts on their draw, except West Adelaide who were unavailable for comment.
They must be busy looking for recruits!!!!!!

I like Friday night games as it leaves the rest of the weekend open, however that's purely from a selfish perspective. Mike makes some excellent points and I can't help but agree. If given the chance to vote, I would vote for Saturday afternoon. We need to look after our players and volunteers. Gotta love the local league - in my opinion the experience is much more enjoyable than the over produced, over commercialised, over exposed national comp. And besides the mighty Bloods aren't part of it, apart from all the recruits we produce.

I thought this had come up in previous years about night games. I thought we struggle to make any money from them due lighting costs, crowd numbers down on cold nights not to mention the unfair situation as noted above when you come up against an AFL reserves side. Did not Centrals last year say/request never to play one (AFL Res) again on a Friday night for that reason?

'Unavailable for comment'? Well why should the general public get any better communication than the members do?
I prefer Sunday games - there's less of the weekend left to be ruined.

'Unavailable for comment' - says it all really

'less of the weekend left to be ruined' - an interesting philosophy. I still reckon Friday night is the best choice for long suffering supporters. We can go home, have a few reds to numb the pain and then get up Saturday morning and start the weekend all over again.

I'm all confused now......I find I am agreeing with both Aldo and Bruce.
All I do know is..Sitting on the terraces on a cold night with icicles on the end of ones nose suffering a 20 goal hiding takes a special kind of supporter. Either that or we are stupid! Enough said no need to reply which it is. silent

I think you will find the women will play before the League in round. Reserves will be at Norlunga

Call me old school but I’m a little fed up with our football being dictated to by the expanded VFL. All SANFL games Saturday Arvo. Neither the Power or Crows deserve special consideration. Double up games eg port/power are only in the schedule so they can comment on the crowd... b/s in my opinion.

So let me get this straight, as property steward, i and other volunteers have the Friday night game v Port in round 1 to do which i normally get home after midnight with night games, then i have to front up at Norlunga the next morning by 9am for a 10.30 reserves game? Whilst the girls play the opener before the league game.

The SANFL don't think about volunteers, FB.

And you live north of the city, too.

dits,
its been going on for years and years --- those at the League have no idea/care and sadly our club management can do nothing about it.

The worst one I had as League Property Steward was a Friday night game at Norwood that I finished at the club at around 1am after unloading and needed to be back by 8am that morning for early start at Richmond --- ended up sleeping on the property room floor that night.

When first game gets nearer next year we will have a chat and if my health allows perhaps I can come out of retirement for one Saturday game to help you boys with the workload -- lets talk then
