Which player from Geelong West played trial matches with us one year in the late 70s before being signed, on the eve of the season, by Geelong?

A further clue - he played for Geelong and then St. Kilda, and was reported, on average, about once for every 10 games played.

Thanks for the clue, will think again.

All I could come up with was Steven Wells, who I think was from Geelong West and obviously played for us, but that didn't fit.

Spot on blacky, and the spelling is correct.
A couple of years beforehand he'd been knocked out in a game and was clinically dead for a couple of minutes.

I always understood that he was sacked because he DARED to stand up to the committee of the time on behalf of his player.

Specifically I was told that players after the game drank HOT bottles of beer whilst Committee had a full range of cold drinks in their littler personal bar --- he wanted cold beer for the players after the game --- HOW DARE HE QUESTION THE COMMITTEE!

Remember social norms were different then and there were the elite and then the rest of the lower class.

In growing up I heard multiple stories from my Grandfather, Father & Uncles of many careers being ended before they start due to upsetting/annoying the elitist commitee.

Lee Harradine wrote:OK, to keep us involved while footy's gone for a while, a history question.

Who was Bert Edwards in West history?

There is so many things I can tell about this man that I do not know where to being so I will throw a few personal highlights and then add some links.

Firstly , through my family I have met him and he was a nice guy, a true westies man. He was considered the "King of the West End" (traditional home of West Adelaide) and in all my discussions over the years with many old west end old timers I have never heard one bad word about him --- his efforts during the depression to ensure families in his constituency had food is legendary.

Secondly, I was told that before westies had a permanent home ground Bert through his role as an Adelaide City Councillor had done all the work to set up for westies to have the "Railways Oval" (north/west corner of parkland opposite Hindley street) however the powers to be (BLOODY COMMITTEE) felt that he was a disreputable character and refused the offer WOW.

At one stage due to an argument with the SANFL ELITE over Bert Edwards westies were nearly thrown out of the league in 1921.
In 1921 West Adelaide nominated him as their delegate to the League's governing body, but was rejected on the grounds that he had once used intemperate language at a junior meeting. Edwards, who had no knowledge of the offence, refused to apologise, and a standoff ensued, which became so entrenched that at one stage consideration was given to disbanding the League and re-forming it without West Adelaide

Truly a West Adelaide Legend that all have forgotten.

Thanks Lee for that link. I have the highlights on the old video but to be able to watch the whole match at Unley 1983 was brilliant.
What impressed me was the whole team effort. There wouldn’t be one player who didn’t make a substantial contribution through out the day & the pressure applied to Sturt was relentless.
The team’s ability to run & attack & take chances & take the game on & open it up was awesome.
We all talk about Bruce’s seven shots for goal at the northern end in the third quarter but some of his bodywork & handball in the other three quarters was amazing.
Hate to single out players as I could talk about each & everyone but Leon Grosser was outstanding & Geoff Morris with his five goals was all class.
Everyone do yourself a favour & have a look at the game.

I was at that game, I don't know how many people you can fit into (the old) Unley oval, but it was standing room only. We only went there to see who we were going to beat in the GF!! I actually went to see Norwood and Sturt play that year, (a first for me), with the same thought in mind!

A question or two that will only be answered in my book, unless someone gives the correct answer. Book available for order soon.

These two are very, very difficult.

1. Who is the most famous player to have played for us?

2. Robert Day is the only player in our history to do one particular thing in his football career.
