Food for Thought Empty Food for Thought

Post by Mypaspective on Fri Mar 27, 2020 5:48 pm

With all AFL clubs struggling with their finances as a result of Covid19 perhaps the 2 Adelaide teams will need to be re-thinking about the costs of fielding a team in the SANFL comp.

Carlton have already cut ties with their VFL (Reserves) team the Northern Bullants & I suspect other Victorian based AFL teams may be forced to follow that course of action for their financial survival.

Assuming from reports that AFL lists may be reduced to 35 players, ongoing operational costs are going to have to be closely scrutinized.

Is it time for a total rethink by both the Crows & Port to return to the old model???
An 8 team SANFL comp with a mini draft of the surplus AFL players (between 11-13 players per club)  amongst the 8 clubs as originally happened.

Bearing in mind there are always a number injured so there might only be 16 or so in total running around in the SANFL. This will also save the 2 clubs from scouring the SA Country & Amateur clubs for top up players. (With smaller lists they would need about 10 each club which is crazy)

I think our comp will be better off, more affordable, less comprimised & save a bucket of money for the 2 AFL clubs with the need for less coaches, trainers, doctor, management & admin staff.

I hope the SANFL CEO’s & League Directors discuss this with the remaining SANFL Management & Commission to explore the possibility.

What do you think????

I think this is a fantastic idea the only issue I have is you are discussing AFL & common sense in the same post LOL.

However,

I think something along this line will occur and hopefully it will be rules similar to what was in place prior to the inclusion of the two additional teams ---- time will tell on this but on face value a very good idea.

I also feel that lessons learnt from this Covid19 situation will lead to dramatic changes to the SANFL teams with significantly reduced football staff ($$$$ saved) perhaps even back to days of old with a Senior Coach, Reserves Coach and 1/2 Assistant Coach supplemented by the Football Manager ---- perhaps also one Runner & one Team Manager/Interchange Steward per Grade. ------- Maybe even a Salary Cap for overall Club senior football program, who knows.

I hope that this stops the long held belief held by the powers above that the SANFL needs to be a 10 team competition as I feel that the available Sponsorship for the SANFL is not suited to a 10 team competition.

I am confident that what ever come out of this there will be significant changes and that the uncontrolled Football costs growth will be stopped.

Haven't we all got short memories. I remember the complaints back then,  due to AFL players dropping in and out of SANFL sides you never knew who you were up against and vice versa. AFL players not trying or not risking injuries, by not going after the hard ball. I remember well Robbie Gray playing for us at Woodville v  Eagles being booed by our supporters for not trying. In fact was pulled aside by the Powers assistant coach and told to do a bit more. Laughing they were.
The disruption to our players being dropped all the time to make way for them.
I'm all for an 8 team SANFL comp but let the AFL reserves play elsewhere. Go to the amateurs if they will have them. Let them change in a tin shed,do them the world of good. And ban the mid season draft. Rips the guts out of our SANFL teams and stuffs all the good work of recruiting.
Bet the SANFL will roll over again though.

I saw Robbie Gray play a couple of ripper games for us along with Matt Connell, Brad Crouch & Pat Dangerfield. They all stood out & showed their skills & class as young players.

I can assure you the AFL sides will not play in the Amateur League so there are only 2 options. SANFL have to look after the 2 SA AFL teams because they provide considerable funding through games at Adelaide Oval which our 8 clubs rely heavily on.

Both options have there challenges, pros & cons so I was just flagging what could happen due to financial stress from Covid19.

Yes they did when first assigned to us after the AFL draft. Naturally they wanted to impress to get into the AFL as a regular. It was later on that they slackened off after already consolidating their AFL positions and returned to us from injury, form etc. There were of course a few exceptions and as a general rule those that came up through Westies tended to try harder. ( probably had some loyalty to us you would hope). Porps and Modra are 2 that quickly come to mind. The interstate recruits not so much though I can recall Dom Cassisi having a crack when he came back after injury. Talking to other supporters at the time all clubs had the same issues with them.
So my own personal view and others are free to disagree, is that given the 2 options, I would rather it stay as is. We can develop our own players better as they must come first, and for 7 of the opponents we play we know what we are up against. The 2 AFL reserves teams will remain a problem in that you never know what they will throw at you. They can be too strong or weak as ...depending on injuries to the first grade. Just my 2 bob's worth. You asked what people think.

Yes no problem TAARS.

My concern surrounds the fact that AFL clubs might be forced to reduce their list size to 35 hence the 2 Adelaide clubs might have to have around 10-11 top up players to make up their SANFL sides.
This is based on 22 + 2 emergencies each AFL game, less a couple of injuries leaves them only 9 players to field their SANFL teams.

That’s not going to be good for the competition & even worse for the disruption to country & amateur clubs. History tells us they would not be very competitive which also not good for our comp.

No win really.

Well it seems this season could be shot and we won't get 18 games or anything close to it by the time this virus has been cleared up, which may not be for a few months yet. Lets presume we get the all clear by July if we are lucky.

These are my thoughts...providing we get the all clear by July.

The 8 SANFL sides play each other once, (forget about the Crows and Magpies) a flick of the coin to see who gets a home game. Gate takings can be shared.
Then the top 4 play off in the finals. It would be a short season but it's better than nothing. Then the SANFL teams have a few weeks off and prepare for next year.
I wouldn't give the winner of my short season a premiership, but they can call it the 2020 Coronavirus cup. Smile

Hi FB. Not bad thoughts but even if a shortened season gets going I doubt whether any supporters will b permitted to go to grounds & watch so I’d rather call this year & prepare for 2021.

Hope u r well mate & hope the next few months fly by so we can catch up again.

All posters please keep safe, stay at home & best of luck. See u on the other side.

I thought as much. An 8 team comp. even if it is not for all the reasons I suggested at the start of this thread.

However I still think this will be the case moving into next year & beyond.

An interesting question from this is.

What happens to the Crows/Power Top Up Players.

Bit of a guess based on some minor knowledge.

Believe top up players are on one year contract that allows them to go back to their original lower grade country team or a lower grade local team

Given effectively their contacts in terms of League football are now defunct I will be very surprised if the SANFL does not give any of player requesting either a clearance to their League club of origin (actually previously played for) or another League team even perhaps a one year permit clearance to another League club with provision to return as Crows/Power Top Up Players if/when they rejoin the SANFL.

Will be interesting to see.

I did not think you were ever feeling the love for Port Adelaide even before the Power become a team LOL
